ID.Me

Security Upgrades Coming Soon to My TRS

TRS to Implement ID.me Security

The State of Montana recently signed an agreement with ID.me, a trusted credential service provider that currently serves 31 state governments and 20 federal agencies. We are pleased to announce that TRS will be one of the first state agencies in Montana to use ID.me! This upgrade will provide robust security and peace of mind for active and retired TRS members who use My TRS, the online member portal.

What is ID.me?

ID.me is the next-generation digital identity wallet that simplifies how individuals securely prove their identity online. ID.me’s technology meets the federal standards for consumer authentication set by the Commerce Department and is approved as a NIST 800-63-3 IAL2 / AAL2 credential service provider by the Kantara Initiative.

To learn how it works, watch this short video from ID.me:

Why is TRS adopting ID.me?

One of TRS’s long-term goals is to expand the features available in My TRS, such as to allow retired members to update the address where their benefit check is mailed or the bank account where payments are deposited. Before we can allow such updates, we must implement a more robust identity verification method, such as that offered by ID.me.

A significant advantage of ID.me is that it provides seamless access across sites. For example, if you already use an ID.me “digital wallet” to sign into your Social Security account (ssa.gov), you’ll eventually use that same digital wallet to access My TRS

When will ID.me be implemented?

No implementation date has been set, but testing should begin in spring 2026. Watch this site for updates!
